Although most nations provide national shipping forecasts and real-time information for waves in their seas and coastal waters, geographical coverage is not complete and accuracy at local level is low. These current limitations are caused by the relatively small number of in situ real-time wave observations. Nowadays, wave data is mainly provided from few wave-monitoring buoys exclusively dedicated to this purpose. Wave-monitoring dedicated buoys are expensive and require costly maintenance, which hamper the growing of data-generating stations.
In this context, the general objective of OCEANMET is to demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of a service of wave data generated by optimised inertial sensors that can be installed in existing buoys to rapidly create a network of stations. The demonstrative pilot will be cover the south Atlantic area (from Biscay Gulf to Cadiz Gulf) and the Mediterranean Sea and involves the deployment of 12-16 stations.
OCEANMET aims to demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of a service of wave data generated by a network of wave-monitoring stations equipped with inertial sensors developed by the company Centro de InvestigacionesSubmarinas (CIS), buoys specially adapted to rough conditions developed by the company Composite Solutions (CS) and satellite communications assessed by the company CLS. Data provided by the stations will validated by final two users; Instituto Hidrográfico (IH) and CLS.
The project results will have direct impact in the technical capability of the participants in the project but will also extrapolate these benefits to European blue economy through dissemination of the results obtained by applying the OCEANMET solutions on the project demonstrative activities. The technologies and systems that will be demonstrated in the course of this project aim at: reducing data accession costs, upscaling cost, increase the accuracy of forecast, extending forecasting capabilities, and enabling the entrance of marine SMEs in new marine markets.
